What we do

Flatiron develops utility-scale battery energy storage systems, overseeing the process from property acquisition to construction to long-term operations.

Transforming surplus power into reliable energy with storage

Growing energy demand requires energy storage systems that can provide flexible and reliable power. Grid congestion, insufficient transmission, and intermittent generation can make it difficult to deliver power to high load areas and those with increasing energy needs. When demand exceeds available supply, grid operators must tap inefficient and outdated “peaker plants” to fill the gap that drive up costs and pollution.

Energy storage provides a way to capture surplus energy—which would otherwise be lost—so it can be used when it’s needed. Common examples include storing nuclear power at night to use during peak hours of the day, or solar energy produced during the afternoon to use in the evening.

Our process
Project development

We identify strategic locations for battery storage that maximize improvement to reliability in regions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S. facing capacity shortfalls.

Community engagement

We collaborate with community members to ensure they have
a voice in their neighborhood and that nearby storage projects have a positive impact.

Permitting and safety

We partner with state and local officials to ensure that our projects comply with the highest safety regulations and environmental standards, prioritizing both security and reliability.

Commercial structuring

We create project offtake agreements through innovative power marketing strategies, robust policy engagement, and by building and nurturing strong partnerships to drive success.

Storage operations

We bring more than a decade of in-house energy storage management experience, and we partner with market leaders to deliver dependable projects enabling more stable generation.

Our difference
Scale

Energy can be stored to serve the needs of individuals and businesses. Flatiron develops utility-scale storage systems that are large enough to meet the needs of the electricity grid and serve entire regions.

Location

Flatiron identifies areas with the most critical reliability needs and uses advanced technology to develop industrial spaces that store energy, focusing primarily on markets in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Flatiron helps ensure efficient energy management to support the region's growing energy demands.

Reliability

Flatiron sources equipment and materials that have minimal environmental impact. All batteries in Flatiron projects come from top-tier suppliers and are stored in specially designed, climate-controlled environments that maximize safety and efficiency.

Experience

With over a decade of experience in utility-scale standalone energy storage, Flatiron’s executive team has the knowledge and capabilities to deliver on new projects.
